Melee Madness @ Loch Salann
8:00 am – June 2, 2013 @ 10:00 pm

The time has come (Sir Michael says) to speak of many things; of shoes and ships and sealing wax, and cabbages and YET ANOTHER Loch Salann Melee Madness!!”  This unique & ancient event will occur on June 1st & 2nd 2013, at its equally unique, incredibly ancient and honorable site at the castle in back of the Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah.  Fighting, archery, thrown weapons, relaxing in the sun— what more could you want?  Come on out!  Join the crowd!  Enjoy the day!  Opening announcements are tentatively planned for 10:00 am on Sat. (or whenever the event steward thinks that enough fighters have shown up.)  The more fighters we have, the more fun the castle siege scenarios will be!!  While all this is going on, the competitions for Baronial archery and thrown weapons champions will also be taking place.  On Sunday morning, weather allowing, House Catwing & Hold Tyte will hold their annual pas d’armes, open to all fighters; see the event steward for details.  Bring your nicest banners and fighting clothes, and display your skills at weapons and words.  Note: fiberglass spears with 2” Mandrake stabbing tips will NOT be allowed at this event!

If you’ve ever wanted to run/sponsor an activity/contest or teach a class (fighting or non-fighting), this is the place to do it; just clear it with the event steward and appropriate coordinator.  While the site will officially OPEN by 8:00 am on Saturday, and CLOSE at 10:00 pm on Sunday, we will be allowed to set up tents Friday night after 5:30 pm.   Unless told otherwise, camping is only allowed this year on the field in front of the castle; please contact the event steward beforehand if you plan on camping overnight.  Even though this will be a 2-day activity, participants are encouraged to come early on Sat., and bring picnic lunches and sunshades/tents (although there are numerous shade trees). This is a very dry site!  Because this is a state facility, anyone bringing alcoholic beverages onsite or found to be in an inebriated condition must be politely asked to leave immediately!  Off-site merchants are only 4-6 minutes away, and while ground fires or open flames are not permitted, off-ground firepits, hibachis and gas grills are.  Pets are welcome if accompanied by responsible owners. The SITE FEE is $7 for adults (18 yrs. old and older), $4 for youths, 5 yrs. old and younger are free and pregnant ladies get a $2 rebate; per family price cap of $22 (not per household!).  Make checks payable to “Barony of Loch Salann, SCA Inc.”.

DIRECTIONS: Take I-15 to the Provo Center Street exit 267; drive east on Center St. (about 2 miles) and enter the hospital grounds. Continue east and turn left at the large planter in the road; follow the road around and up to the castle area (the “off limits” signs aren’t meant for us).

Jun 20 Thu
Knowne World Dance and Music Symposium @ East Kingdom
Jun 20 – June 24, 2013 all-day

June is fast approaching so hopefully you are making your plans for a long weekend of dancing and music, color and pageantry.  Dancing starts Thursday evening, June 20, with an Informal evening of dancing and music.  Gate opens at 5pm, dancing starts at 6:30 at the parish building of St.  Peters church (see note in directions).  Gate opens at 8am on Friday and Saturday morning at Universal Preservation Hall with classes starting at 9.  Classes for dancers and musicians beginning through advanced Friday morning through Sunday morning are located at both sites.
Active classes, roundtables, playing and lecture, we expect to have it all.  Some classes have already been confirmed and are on the website.

Have you been working on a new dance? Friday evening you will have an opportunity show us all in the way of a bit of competition.  The presentation should be a new (within the past year) reconstruction of a period dance up through the 1602 dance treatises is acceptable.  Judging will be based on more than knowing the steps however.  Poise and timing, attention to one’s partner, decorum and grace, manner of movement and the beauty of the dance at court is the aim.

Instrumental or vocal ensembles that would be interested in providing entertainment or background music during breaks or lunch please contact the event steward.

This event is different than most events you may have attended.  we will be dancing on wood floors so wear comfortable shoes.  The rules for period clothing are a bit relaxed due distances that folks travel, weather, and length of the event.  For all Formal balls on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, pre-17th century clothing will be required.  Loaner garb will be available.  However, for daytime classes, period clothing is encouraged but not required.

Merchant space may be available on Friday and Saturday but is very limited and so merchants must be pre-registered.  Therefore, we are limiting merchant wares to music or dance related items only.  Please contact the event steward if interested.

The website is updated often so take a look at www.kwdms.org .  Pre-registration is recommended offering significant discounts open now through June 1 including ACCEPS for credit card payments.  Be certain that if you like to dance, or if you think you’d like to dance or if music is your passion, then this is the event for you.

Site Opens: Thursday 6/20/13 5pm
Site Closes: Sunday 6/23/13 4 pm
